Series A Startup: Built to Scale on Day One
Health tech startup — Series A — Chicago, IL
The Challenge
A Chicago-based digital health startup had closed their Series A funding round and were 90 days from their public platform launch. Their existing infrastructure was a two-server DigitalOcean setup that had worked for demos and beta testing but was nowhere near ready for production health data workloads.
The requirements were non-negotiable: HIPAA-compliant infrastructure, high availability across multiple AWS availability zones, a CI/CD pipeline so their small engineering team could deploy independently, and enough headroom to handle 10× the expected launch traffic. They had 90 days and a $400K infrastructure budget.
Our Approach
Skygate Advisors assigned a two-person team of senior architects for the duration of the engagement. We began with a two-day design sprint that produced a target architecture, HIPAA responsibility matrix, and a 12-week delivery plan with weekly milestones.
The Results
The production-ready AWS environment was delivered and signed off in week 11 — 11 days before the client's launch date. The engineering team had autonomously run three successful production deploys through the new CI/CD pipeline before Skygate Advisors rolled off the engagement.
The client launched on time to strong reviews. The platform handled 8× the projected launch traffic on day one without any intervention. The HIPAA documentation package Skygate Advisors delivered has since been used in two enterprise healthcare client procurement processes, helping the startup close deals that would have been inaccessible without the compliance architecture.
“We were scared. Series A money, 90-day deadline, HIPAA requirements we barely understood. Skygate Advisors made us feel like we had the most experienced infrastructure team in the room — because we did.”
